USS POLLUX SHIPMATE BIO'S

USS POLLUX REUNION ASSOCIATION FOUNDER AND
PRESIDENT

GLEN BROXSON (SKSN-SK2 55-58) -  My  loving wife Martha and I reside at 4518 Peaden Road, Pace, Florida 32571-2858.   Our phone number is (850) 994-0416.  Our Email Address is: GLENBROXSON@AOL.COM.  We celebrated our 47th wedding anniversary on May 1, 2004 in Hawaii. We have one daughter, three sons, two granddaughters and ten grandsons.  My wife Martha is a retired RN and our daughter Glenda is a RN in California. Our eldest son is a rural mail carrier in Iowa.  One of our twin sons retired from the U.S. Army in July 2005. He served in Iraq during Desert Storm and Iraqui Freedom and now resides in St. Simons Island, Georgia.  His twin brother is a Graphic Artist Manager for a DOD contractor at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.   I served aboard the USS POLLUX (AKS-4) from November 1955 through December 1958 as a SKSA/SK2.  In September 1975 I opted to transfer to the Fleet Reserves as a Senior Chief Storekeeper (E-8), after serving twenty years in the navy and fourteen years on sea duty, rather than accepting orders to the USS SAROTOGA (CV-60) as a Master Chief Storekeeper (E9).  In 1985 upon completion of 30 years service (20 active and 10 in the Fleet Reserves), I received notification from the navy department indicating that I was now a Chief Warrant Officer (W-2), RET. This was a  pleasant surprise so I took the letter to the Personnel Support Detachment (PSD) at NAS Pensacola and they offered to assist me if I wanted to pursue the delayed promotion.  They also advised me that my E-8 retirement pay was more than the W-2 retirement pay so  I decided not to pursue the matter any further.    My  other duty stations were two tours at NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida (59-61 and 72-73); USS PERKINS (DDR-877)(61-63); USS PARSONS (DD-949) (63-66); HT-8 ALF Ellyson Field, Pensacola, FL (66-68); THIRD Naval Construction Brigade in Vietnam (68-69); USS HAMMERBERG (DE-1015) (1969); USS ALBANY (CG-10)(69-70); USS LEXINGTON (CVT-16)(70-72) and Training Squadron THREE at NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Florida (73-75).  In September 2002 I retired from Federal Civil Service. Upon retirement I was serving as the Assistant Contracts Manager at NAS WHITING FIELD, Milton, FL.  In November 2002 I was called back to work at  NAS Pensacola as an Engineering Technician. I worked there for about five months. I am now completely retired.

PAST PLANNER/CHAIRMAN/TREASUER

His other duty stations included 11ND Headquarters San Diego; USS LST 799; FLTACTS Yokosuka, Japan; FLTACTS Sasebo, Japan; NAS North Island, USS HECTOR (AR-7); SOAP Team Long Beach and the Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, CA.

PAST REUNION ASSOCIATION SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR

CASPER "SARGE" NAUMANN (42-46) resided at 4654 Mirabeau Ave., New Orleans, LA 70126-354. His wife passed away in 1984. They had one daughter and one son. Their daughter Kay is the manager of a local bank and their son passed away at the age of sixteen. At the outbreak of WWII Casper enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a SK3. Shortly after reporting aboard the USS POLLUX he was promoted to CSK (SKC) because of his former military experience as a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and his longshore experience. After the war he got out of the navy and entered the Major Appliance business, where in his own words, he enjoyed both failure and success.  Sarge celebrated his 96th birthday on October 16, 2003. He  was looking forward to attending the POLLLUX reunion in Mobile in October 2004 but the Lord called him home on June 2, 2004.

I usually always called Sarge every Saturday night at exactly 6:30 PM.  If I ever forgot to call him, he would call me. The last time I talked to him was May 22, 2004. Martha and I were in Ottawa, Kansas for one of our Grandson’s graduation.  When he didn’t answer the phone at 6:30, I got a little worried but I called back again at 7:00 PM and this time he answered the phone. I asked him where he was when I first called and he told me he had gone down to the grocery store to pick up a few things. In kind of a scolding manner I asked him if he had actually driven to the store and he shot right back and asked me how else was he supposed to go to the store, walk?

On May 29, 2004, we were in a motel in Jackson, Mississippi when I called him but all I got was his answering machine.  When we arrived home on Sunday, May 30, 2004, we had two messages from one of his close friends telling us that Sarge was in the hospital. After several calls we eventually learned that he had been diagnosed with having Aggressive Lymphoma and the doctor had already started giving him chemotherapy treatments.  We had been on the road for 12 days and virtually exhausted but we started making plans to visit him at the hospital the following Thursday.  On Wednesday evening, June 2, 2004, I talked to one of Sarge’s nephews who told me that his uncle Casper would probably not live through the night. Sure enough, Thursday morning I received a call telling me that our beloved shipmate Casper (Sarge) Naumann had died at approximately 11:00 PM June 2, 2004.  Martha and I drove over to New Orleans on Friday to be able to attend the funeral on Saturday. Sarge was honored with a full Military Funeral and I was honored to serve as one of the Pallbearers for him.

When I first asked Sarge to provide me with Inspirational Words for the POLLUX NEWSLETTER he would either send me one of the many cards that he always carried with him (he passed those cards out to everyone he met), or provide some other words of wisdom.  Sarge is now serving on the Staff of the Supreme Commander and isn’t available to provide those Inspirational Words for us anymore but his spirit will always be with us. He dearly loved the POLLUX and all of his shipmates.  After receiving word of Sarge’s death, Martha asked me to send the following  to his daughter Kay:

Proverbs 12:25    “Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.”

1.       Sarge always had good words to make people glad.

Proverbs 16:24   “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.”

2.   Sarge’s words were sweet, they lifted your spirit and you felt better physically just being with him.

Proverbs 17:22   “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.”

3.       Sarge’s humor was better than any medicine I know.

Proverbs 18:24    “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly.”

4.       Sarge was a true friend and he had countless friends.  To know Sarge was to love him as he was full of love and kindness.

USS POLLUX REUNION ASSOCIATION CO-FOUNDER

Charles R. (Charlie) Marlow (42-44) resides at 2316 Timberrige Circle, Vestavia AL 35243 PH: 205-979-4181 (HM), 1-800-825-9431 (WK) with his wife Norma Jo. They have five children and twelve grandchildren. Charlie was a CSK (SKC) on the AKS-2 and AKS-4. He served on active duty from 1941 until 1946 and from 1946 until 1951 in the Naval Reserves. His naval career highlight was when he made Chief Petty Officer.  Charlie and Norma Jo have attended all of the POLLUX reunions.   Charlie is still actively involved as a manager of a large Lumber Company in Birmingham.  Charlie is one of the reasons why  I started trying to get these reunions organized. I saw an ad in the Stars & Stripes back in Aug. or Sept. 1994 announcing that the POLLUX would be having a reunion in St. Louis in Oct. 1994.   Charlie was the contact so I called him and learned that it had been called off because there were not enough shipmates interested in attending.  That is when I decided  wholeheartedly to try to have a reunion in Pensacola. The rest is history.   (Charlie is 84 years young and still work as a Lumberyard Manager).

PAST USS POLLUX REUNION ASSOCIATION HISTORIAN

They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in Oct. 1994 on a cruise to Alaska. Aaron was a SM2 on the AKS-4. Ack-Ack's naval career highlights was spending Shore Patrol Duty on VJ day in Manilla, P.I. He said the POLLUX also had 120 former American POW's onboard for transportation at the end of the war. Aaron and Gloria have one son, Robert.  After the navy, Aaron worked for 42 years for LIGHTOLIER (Lighting Fixtures and Lamps) as the Chief Draftsman. He retired in 1987.  The very first letter that I received  when I started trying to locate shipmates back in 1994 was from ACK-ACK

He called me on Aug. 17, 1997 and told me that he had heard about the reunion from the Navy Times. A friend who worked at a nearby Navy Base had seen the article and told him about it. Bill said he would really like to attend the Norfolk reunion but he works for the Davenport Fire Department and can’t get off with this short notice. He said he would definitely make every attempt to attend the next reunion. On Aug. 26, 1997 I received an E-mail from Bill telling me he would be willing to work with us on having a reunion in the Midwest.  Bill attended the Las Vegas reunion in 1999 and has been attending all the reunions sine then.

His daughter is a naval officer and she was stationed at Port Canaveral back in 1994/95.  While she was visiting with one of her fellow officers parent's home in Rockledge, FL she mentioned something about her dad and the POLLUX reunion.  Her friend's parents just happened to be Jim and Fran Huntress.   Jim was the Assistant Supply Officer of the POLLUX (AKS-4) from 1957 through 1959.   Jim sent Floyd's name to me and the rest is history.  Floyd and Gwen have attended all of the POLLUX reunions.

SOILEAU, LOUIS H. (LOUIE) (55-59)-- Louie resides at 918 Shady Lane, Oakdale, LA 71463 PH: 318-335-0468. Louie was a SKSA/SK2 aboard the AKS-4.    Louie’s wife Jackie died in January 1998 after being sick for several months...she and Louie had been married for 38 years. On June 20, 2000 I received an email from Louie informing me that he had married a sweet lady by the name of Dianna on January 15, 2000. He also informed me that he had purchased a computer and was now "on-line." His email address is: LOUDI@WNONLINE.NET.

On December 26, 1958 when yours truly was suddenly ordered to leave the POLLUX and board the USS BENNINGTON (CVA-20) for transport back to Treasure Island for discharge, I was completely broke because I had spent all my money over Christmas. Louie Soileau knew that I did not have any money so he lent me $15.00. I promised him faithfully that I would repay him but time slipped away and I lost contact with him. Over the years I kept thinking about that debt that I owed and I couldn't forget that unlike most of us young sailors who spent everything that we made, Louie had always sent a big portion of his paycheck back home to Louisiana to care for his widowed mother. One night in 1968 while I was sitting in a hole in Vietnam with my Seabee buddies praying that the rockets and mortars would stop coming in I thought about that debt again. After the rocket attack was over, I wrote a note to Louie and sent him that $15.00 that I had borrowed ten years prior. I remember that I apologized for the delay and told him that I was sorry that I couldn't afford to pay the interest that had accrued over the years. Thanks again Louie. Your Shipmate and Buddy, Glen.
